GLOBAL CAMPUSES CREATES CONNECTION

Amanda & Jim, Marathon

The sense of belonging as a campus member provides the much-needed social connection essential to one’s physical and mental health. Furthermore, a commitment to building supportive relationships and community are crucial components of the Global Campus model.

Global Campuses facilitate authentic relationship building through a highly participatory approach led by the campus participants and aimed to blur the line between ability and disability while emphasizing one another’s value. This is accomplished through collaborative community service and opportunities for participatory, interactive educational experiences such as co-teaching, field trips, and other shared community experiences. Through these opportunities, persons with developmental disabilities are given the space to share a positive narrative on the lives they lead, using their strengths and coping with any limitations. Broadening human connections can lead to the dissolution of pre-conceived notions and stereotypes, enabling us to view our shared humanity more through what binds us rather than what separates. These participant-driven activities and initiatives encourage new relationships and opportunities that improve the quality of life for some of our most disadvantaged citizens while also contributing measurably to our communities' vibrancy and inclusiveness. Campuses are strengthened in their curriculum development, community engagement, and sustainability; communities are more accepting and inclusive.
